International Customs Day
January 26 · Level 8 · #489 of 2238
International Customs Day recognises the services that oversee goods crossing national borders. Their task has two complementary sides: stopping illegal trade and helping legitimate shipments move through the required checks as smoothly as possible.
How it is celebrated: customs administrations hold professional events, recognise employees and explain their work to the public. The World Customs Organization chooses an annual theme to guide discussions and awareness activities across its international community.
The date marks the first session of the Customs Co-operation Council on 26 January 1953. That organisation later became known as the World Customs Organization, linking today's observance to an early milestone in international customs cooperation.
