International Day for Maternal Health and Rights

This day reminds us that every woman deserves a safe pregnancy, a safe birth and good care afterwards. It draws attention to access to health services and to respect for mothers' rights.

How it is celebrated: advocacy groups and health workers run campaigns, community meetings and free check-ups, and people share information about maternal health online. The white ribbon is the movement's symbol.

In India, 11 April is also National Safe Motherhood Day, chosen because it is the birthday of Kasturba Gandhi, the wife of Mahatma Gandhi.
