International Boy Scouts Day
January 5 · Level 8 · #454 of 2238

This day is for the Scout movement, which teaches young people friendship, independence and usefulness to others. Scouts learn to live outdoors, help people and keep their word.
How it is celebrated: troops meet at camps and on hikes, light a campfire, repeat the Scout promise and recall the motto Be Prepared. Former Scouts share stories with the young, and groups do a good turn such as cleaning up a park.
The movement was founded by the British army officer Robert Baden-Powell. He held his first experimental camp on Brownsea Island in 1907, and the fleur-de-lis became the Scouts' badge.
