International Mountaineering Day
August 8 · Level 9 · #445 of 2238

International Mountaineering Day is an informal celebration for people drawn to high peaks. It honours the history of climbing, the trust between climbing partners and the need to treat mountain environments with care.
How it is celebrated: climbing clubs bring members together for expedition stories and training sessions. Some climbers head into the mountains when conditions allow, while beginners learn about equipment and safety closer to home.
The date recalls the first documented ascent of Mont Blanc. Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard reached the summit on 8 August 1786, making their climb a landmark in mountaineering history.
