Icelandic National Day

Iceland’s National Day marks the founding of the republic in 1944 and the end of its union with the Danish monarchy. It brings national history into town squares and streets, with public ceremonies alongside celebrations for families.

How it is celebrated: communities organize parades, concerts, speeches and children’s activities. A distinctive participant is the Fjallkonan, a woman in national costume who personifies Iceland.

The date is the birthday of independence campaigner Jón Sigurðsson. He died long before the republic was established, so the choice connects the achievement of 1944 with the nineteenth-century movement that helped make it possible.
