Birthday of King Harald V of Norway
February 21 · Level 2 · #1825 of 2238
This date honours Harald V, who was born in 1937 and became Norway's king in 1991. During his lifetime, his birthday offered a public occasion to recognise the monarch and his relationship with the country.
How it is celebrated: the established observance included Norwegian flags on government buildings, birthday greetings and coverage of the king's life. Following his death in 2026, these customs belong to the history of his reign.
Harald represented Norway in sailing at three Olympic Games: Tokyo in 1964, Mexico City in 1968 and Munich in 1972.
