Gobstopper Day

A gobstopper is a big, hard, round sweet that lasts a very long time in the mouth. It is made of layers, so its colour and flavour change as it slowly dissolves.

How it is celebrated: people buy a bag, argue over who can make one last longest, and guess the colour of the next layer. Plenty of grown-ups also reminisce about childhood trips to the corner sweet shop.

In Roald Dahl's 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Willy Wonka invents the Everlasting Gobstopper, a sweet that never gets smaller however long you suck it.
