June 4 · Level 4 · #1350 of 2238
The Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces honours military service and the country's defence traditions. It falls on the birthday of Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, one of Finland's best-known military leaders.
How it is celebrated: national flags are flown, a military parade takes place and wreaths are laid at memorials. Promotions and decorations are also associated with the occasion.
On his 75th birthday in 1942, Mannerheim received the title Marshal of Finland. He remains the only person ever to have held that special rank.
