International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

This United Nations observance places human dignity at the centre of efforts to end poverty. Alongside income, it addresses exclusion, access to opportunities and the right of people experiencing poverty to help shape decisions affecting them.

How it is celebrated: public gatherings, discussions and solidarity events bring people together to share lived experience and consider ways to tackle poverty and exclusion.

The observance grew from a gathering at the Trocadéro in Paris in 1987. A commemorative stone unveiled there became a lasting symbol of solidarity with people living in poverty.
