Russian Press Day

Russian Press Day recognizes journalists, editors, publishers and printing workers. It celebrates the many hands involved in taking a story from an initial question to a finished publication that readers can open and explore.

How it is celebrated: newsrooms and professional associations congratulate colleagues, present awards and organize gatherings. Libraries and museums display historic newspapers, while industry events offer space to discuss contemporary media work.

The occasion is linked to Peter I's Vedomosti, which began appearing in print in 1703. Russia already had an earlier news service, however: handwritten bulletins known as Kuranty were prepared for the tsar and his circle.
