Cyber Monday is the big online shopping day that falls on the Monday after US Thanksgiving. Shops post discounts on electronics, gadgets and gifts, and shoppers hunt for bargains before the festive season.
How it is celebrated: people build wish lists in advance, compare prices and keep an eye on countdown timers. Retailers run flash sales that last only a few hours and often throw in free shipping.
The name was coined in 2005 by the online arm of a US retail federation, which had noticed a surge in web orders right after the Thanksgiving weekend.
