Cognac Birthday
April 1 · Level 4 · #1414 of 2238

This unofficial holiday is for fans of cognac, the famous French brandy distilled from wine. It is a reason to raise a glass to the skill of growers and distillers, and to the patience that ageing demands.
How it is celebrated: people hold tastings, dinners with well-chosen pairings and visits to cognac houses, or evenings spent learning what VS, VSOP and XO mean on a label. Some simply pour a small glass and take their time.
Real cognac comes only from the Cognac region of western France. The wine is distilled twice in copper pot stills and then aged in oak barrels for at least two years.
