Chulalongkorn Day
October 23 · Level 2 · #1980 of 2238

Thailand honours King Chulalongkorn, also known as Rama V, on the anniversary of his death. He is remembered for reforms that included the abolition of slavery, changes to government administration and the expansion of education.
How it is celebrated: officials and members of the public lay wreaths and flowers at monuments to the king. His equestrian statue at Bangkok’s Royal Plaza is a central gathering place for commemorative ceremonies.
That statue was unveiled while Chulalongkorn was still alive: it marked the fortieth anniversary of his reign in 1908.
