Chakri Memorial Day is a public holiday in Thailand marking the accession of King Rama I and the founding of the ruling dynasty in 1782. It is the day Thais remember how the modern monarchy and the capital in Bangkok began.
How it is celebrated: the king lays a wreath at the statue of Rama I in Bangkok, and ceremonies honouring the kings of the dynasty take place at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. Many people have the day off, and some go to pay their respects to the founder.
In 1932, for the 150th anniversary of the dynasty and of Bangkok, the Memorial Bridge opened in the capital. The statue of Rama I stands beside it, and the main ceremony of the day is held there.
