Bicycle Day

An informal holiday marking 19 April 1943, when Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann deliberately tested LSD on himself and then cycled home. It is kept mostly by fans of science history and psychedelic culture.

How it is celebrated: people go for bike rides, hold meetups and talks about the discovery, and researchers look back at how scientific attitudes to such substances have shifted over time.

Hofmann first synthesised LSD in 1938 at the Sandoz laboratory in Basel. He had felt its odd effects by accident three days before the famous bike ride.
