World Day for Audiovisual Heritage
October 27 · Level 6 · #1078 of 2238

World Day for Audiovisual Heritage calls attention to the films, sound recordings and broadcasts that preserve our shared memory. Established by UNESCO in 2005, it encourages people to protect these records so future generations can hear and see the past.
How it is celebrated: archives, museums and libraries host screenings, exhibitions and talks with preservation specialists. Events explain how recordings are rescued and why digitization takes expertise.
A recording can survive intact and still become inaccessible: the machine needed to play it may disappear first. Preservation therefore means keeping a way to read the material, too.
