World Waterfowl Day

This day is for ducks, geese, swans and the other birds that live on and around water. It reminds people that these birds depend on clean wetlands and quiet places to nest.

How it is celebrated: nature lovers head to ponds and lakes with binoculars to watch, count and photograph the birds. A good habit is to skip the bread and bring something better for them, such as oats or grain.

Waterfowl stay dry because they spread oil from a special gland near the tail over their feathers, which makes the plumage water-repellent.
