World Turtle Day
May 23 · Level 4 · #1487 of 2238
World Turtle Day draws attention to the protection of turtles and tortoises, from ocean travellers to land dwellers. Habitat loss, pollution and illegal trade threaten these animals, so the day pairs appreciation with practical support.
How it is celebrated: conservation groups share information, raise funds for rescue work and organise shoreline cleanups. Sanctuaries introduce visitors to their animals and explain why wild turtles belong in the wild.
A turtle's shell is part of its skeleton, connected to its ribs and backbone. Unlike a cartoon character, a real turtle cannot climb out of it.
