World Sea Turtle Day

Sea turtles have been crossing the oceans for millions of years, yet many species are now under threat. This day puts their protection in the spotlight.

How it is celebrated: conservation groups organise beach clean-ups, school talks and guided visits, and volunteers at nesting beaches watch over the nests so hatchlings can reach the sea undisturbed.

The date honours the birthday of Archie Carr, the American biologist who devoted his career to studying sea turtles. A hatchling's sex depends on the temperature of the sand: warmer nests produce more females.
