World Pedestrian Day
August 17 · Level 6 · #962 of 2238

Everyone is a pedestrian at least some of the time, and this day asks cities to make walking safe and pleasant. It nudges drivers to pay more attention and walkers to stay alert at crossings.
How it is celebrated: people go for strolls, local campaigners organise walking tours and calls for safer crossings and wider pavements, and plenty of commuters simply leave the car keys at home and walk to work.
Bridget Driscoll, killed at the Crystal Palace in London in 1896, is remembered as the first pedestrian in Britain to die in a collision with a car.
