World Aquatic Animal Day
April 3 · Level 8 · #654 of 2238

This day is for the animals of seas, rivers and lakes: fish, crustaceans, molluscs, marine mammals and many more. It reminds us that aquatic animals have interests of their own, and that their fate depends largely on people.
How it is celebrated: ecologists, lawyers and animal advocates host online talks and discussions about fishing, fish farming and water pollution. Aquariums and schools run tours and lessons, and anyone can mark the day by learning something new about fish or octopuses.
The day is a recent invention, launched in 2020 by animal-protection advocates in the United States. Science knows of more than 30,000 species of fish alone, which is more than all mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians put together.
