Tin Can Day

A day for the humble tin can, which keeps food fresh in the pantry and the camping bag. This modest invention changed how people store food.

How it is celebrated: people cook with canned ingredients, remember camping dinners, drop empties into the recycling bin and turn clean cans into pen pots and lanterns.

Peter Durand patented the tin can for preserving food in England in 1810, and the can opener only arrived several decades later.
