Sea Serpent Day
August 7 · Level 9 · #352 of 2238
This day is for the sea monsters of sailors' tales: huge serpents said to rise from the deep. It is a good excuse to talk about the mysteries of the ocean and how myths are born.
How it is celebrated: mystery fans read old seafaring yarns, watch monster movies, draw fantastical serpents and argue over whether any of them could be real.
Many sea serpent stories may have grown out of sightings of the oarfish, a ribbon-shaped silvery fish that can reach roughly eight metres in length.
