School Day of Non-violence and Peace
January 30 · Level 1 · #2056 of 2238

The School Day of Non-violence and Peace teaches children to live together, respect one another and settle quarrels without force. The date marks the death of Mahatma Gandhi on 30 January 1948.
How it is celebrated: schools hold special assemblies, pupils draw posters, sing songs about peace and learn about Gandhi, and some classes write their own rules for kind behaviour.
The idea came in 1964 from Llorenç Vidal, a Spanish poet and teacher from Mallorca. In countries whose school year follows the southern calendar, the day is moved to 30 April.
