Linux Day
August 25 · Level 8 · #502 of 2238

Linux Day marks 25 August 1991, when a Finnish student named Linus Torvalds told an online newsgroup about the free operating system he was building. It is a day for celebrating how a small side project grew into one of the most influential pieces of open software.
How it is celebrated: users try out new distributions, share screenshots of their desktops, and give old laptops a second life. Some communities hold meetups and install fests where volunteers help newcomers set up their first system.
Torvalds originally called it just a hobby that would not be big and professional. Today the Linux kernel sits inside Android phones, and since 2017 it has powered every supercomputer on the TOP500 list.
