International Workers’ Day

International Workers’ Day celebrates solidarity among working people and the campaign for fair treatment at work. It recalls the struggles behind safer workplaces, decent pay and time to rest—things that did not simply arrive with the job.

How it is celebrated: trade unions and community groups organise marches, rallies and public gatherings. Where it is a day off, concerts, countryside outings and time with family are also popular.

The eight-hour working day was a central demand of the early movement. Yet the United States, where key events behind May Day took place, celebrates Labor Day in September.
