International Safety Pin Day

International Safety Pin Day honours a tiny gadget that rescues you when a button pops off or a seam gives way. The date recalls the patent granted for the safety pin in 1849.

How it is celebrated: people trade stories about the times a safety pin saved their day, make jewellery and keychains out of pins, and sewing fans dig out their tins of spares.

The American inventor Walter Hunt received the patent on 10 April 1849. The popular story says he came up with the design while fiddling with a piece of wire, trying to pay off a $15 debt.
