International Owl Awareness Day

International Owl Awareness Day

This day is about owls and the importance of protecting the places they live. These night hunters keep rodent numbers in check, yet their habitats are increasingly lost to logging and growing cities.

How it is celebrated: nature lovers go out at dusk to listen for owl calls, visit talks at nature centres and meet birds that are being treated at wildlife rehabilitation centres. Children make owl crafts.

An owl has 14 neck vertebrae, twice as many as a human, which lets it turn its head about 270 degrees. Its soft feathers make its flight almost silent.
