International Cinema Day

This day celebrates the birth of cinema and the people who make films. The date goes back to 28 December 1895, when the Lumière brothers showed their first films to a paying audience.

How it is celebrated: cinemas and film clubs put on retrospectives and screenings of classics, friends gather for a movie night at home, and film fans argue happily over their favourites.

That first paid screening took place in the Grand Café on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris, and a ticket cost one franc.
