European Day of Languages

The European Day of Languages champions linguistic diversity and encourages language learning at every age. Coordinated by the Council of Europe, it grew out of the European Year of Languages in 2001.

How it is celebrated: schools, libraries and cultural centers organize language games, quizzes, introductory classes and conversations with speakers of different languages. Participants get a chance to try unfamiliar words and discover their neighbors' languages.

The celebration includes languages you can see as well as hear. Sign languages are part of Europe's linguistic diversity, and there is no single universal sign language.
