Astronomy Day in Armenia
September 18 · Level 3 · #1769 of 2238

Armenia’s Astronomy Day celebrates the study of the universe and the country’s contribution to it. The occasion falls on the birthday of astrophysicist Viktor Ambartsumian, founder of the Byurakan Observatory and an influential researcher of stars and galaxies.
How it is celebrated: astronomers meet school and university students, give public talks and introduce visitors to observatory research. Telescope observations offer a closer look at the sky when the weather permits.
The Byurakan survey identified the objects known as Markarian galaxies, distinguished by unusually strong ultraviolet emission. They take their name from astronomer Benjamin Markarian.
